Amid Budget Cuts, RTA Removes Wheels in Favor of Using Your Legs ‘Flintstones Style’

By removing the wheels, engines, and bottoms of the vehicles, users will power the bus with their own two feet.

A $78 million budget gap has led the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority to cut services, initiate a hiring freeze, and consider removing all wheels and engines from its fleet of buses. By removing the wheels, engines, and bottoms of the vehicles, users will power the bus with their own two feet, just like the cars from The Flintstones.

“Moving the bus forward is an essential part of the public transit experience,” said RTA’s General Manager, “yet the wheels and engines are an unnecessary and costly expense. Getting the public to power the bus Flintstones style is not only great for physical activity that leads to positive health outcomes, but it also saves the agency a lot of money.”

The RTA will continue to charge $2.50 per ride.
